Pastors
Culturally Irrelevant
Chris Mayfield 06/22/08
It is funny, when most pastors talk about being culturally relevant, it is usually in regards to their message series and then they flippantly throw in 1 Cor 9:19-23. (Please read before you go on.) But when I look at what they're doing it is not culturally relevant at all. My point is that Paul looked to built bridges. He didn't set up shop and say ok we are here now come to us. He built bridges by going and building relationships with people where they were doing life.
When he came to a town he would find the synagogue and build bridges so that he could have a platform in relationship to be able to clearly preach the truth. But for those outside the law he would also go and build a relationship again so he would have a connection before he began to share the truth.
So Journey Church lets be culturally relevant by building bridges in everyday life. In about 3 weeks we have an opportunity to live out 1 Cor 9:19-23, by serving like Paul did, at the "Meet Me in Mill Creek" Festival. There will be close to 30,000 people in attendance over the two day festival who we live amongst day in and day out. What a great opportunity to give up our rights(not our freedom), so that we may gain a widespread chance to share the gospel. Irrelevant: waiting for them to come to us. Relevant: go, do, be.
