Jeff & Marybeth Dillard 02/22/10
When we thought about our marriage and when we think of each other the first thing that comes to mind is love. As a Christian though, the glory in that thought, is that we know that Christ IS love; therefore Christ is the epicenter, start and end of our marriage. To us, Biblical marriage means loving Christ more than we love each other. If MaryBeth’s joy comes from Jeff, then he will often fail her. And if Jeff sets his foundation on MaryBeth, he will constantly be disappointed. In a marriage focused on Christ you acknowledge that your spouse is in Jesus’ hands, and therefore you submit your desires and prayers for your spouse to the Lord. Ideally, when an argument arises, as it inevitably will, it doesn’t become a game of he said/she said – but instead asking each other, what does the Word say? Every couple, Christian or not, fights and at the root of all these fights is sin and selfishness. When you think that the two of you have the answers then what good ever comes from asking questions? Biblical marriage is humbling yourself before the Lord first, and then your spouse. As Paul so poetically put it, in 1 Corinthians “it [love] does not rejoice at wrong doing, but rejoices with the truth.” Rejoice in Christ with your spouse and He will delight in your marriage.
"Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things" 1 Corinthians 13:4-7
